Pablo Picasso Was Born 145 Years Ago Today. He Reinvented the Nude More Times Than Anyone.

On October 25, 1881, a boy was born in Málaga who would spend the next nine decades doing one thing above all others: taking the human body apart and putting it back together. Pablo Picasso was born 145 years ago today, and the nude was his permanent subject.

He inherited it as a Spanish birthright. The naked woman at rest had a long Iberian pedigree. Goya painted the Maja desnuda around 1800, the first reclining nude in Western art to carry no mythological or religious excuse. A generation before him, Velázquez painted the Rokeby Venus, her back to the viewer, her face caught in a mirror. The nude was already a tradition of looking. Picasso decided to look harder than anyone.

For most of his early career, Picasso honored that tradition. Then, in 1907, he broke it. Les Demoiselles d’Avignon took the oldest subject in Western painting, five nude women, and rebuilt it as fractured planes and faces borrowed from African masks. The picture alarmed even his friends. Braque said looking at it felt like drinking petrol. The nude had survived five centuries of idealization. Picasso dismantled it in a single canvas.

What happened next explains his genius. He did not abandon the nude after demolishing it. He returned to it, decade after decade, in a dialogue that lasted until his death in 1973. He reworked Velázquez’s Las Meninas in 1957, fifty-eight variations on a single picture. He painted reclining nudes into his nineties, the late figures sprawled across the canvas with a looseness that took a lifetime to earn.

The lesson of Picasso’s life is that the nude is never finished. Every generation thinks it has exhausted the body, and every generation is wrong. Picasso proved that a single subject, the human figure at rest, could carry an entire century of invention. The Maja and the Rokeby Venus survived him, as they will survive us. Picasso made sure that after him, no one could paint a body without hearing his echo.
